Work Can Be a Pain in The Rear

By Sally Ormond of Briar Copywriting

As a freelance copywriter I work from home. Most of my day is spent sat at my desk typing, researching, thinking and editing.

For many my job sounds like a dream come true - I'm my own boss, I decide the hours I work (just so long as my deadlines are met), I get to decide what jobs I take on and I don't have a long commute to work everyday.

But there is a downside to being a writer - the amount of time I spend sat down.

Quite a few years ago I used to do a bit of horse riding. However one day Splash (the horse I was riding at the time) and I parted company as we attempted to go over a jump. It was one of those slow motion moments in life. He got his footing wrong as he took off and I knew I had two choices as I saw his head coming towards me:

1. Try to hang on and risk a broken nose and God knows what else.

2. Take my chances and bail out.

I opted for the latter. I didn't get a broken nose by I did see stars as the ground was quite hard. By the way, Splash was absolutely fine.

The result of this little escapade is that now I get lower back pain and a frozen shoulder now and then. Therefore doing a job that involves a lot of sitting isn't ideal.

Over the past few years the shoulder problem has got worse and I've started having Bowen's treatment on it. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it is a soft tissue remedial therapy that involves very gentle pressure being applied to various muscles and tendons (www.thebowentechnique.com). It is incredibly relaxing and it works.

My practitioner constantly advises me to reduce the time I spend at my desk. I do try my best to limit being sat down for more than half an hour at a time. But when I am 'in the zone' writing or have a tight deadline to hit, it's easier said than done.

Therefore I have finally decided to invest in a kneeling chair. I've heard wonderful things about them. Because they shift your body weight, the pressure on your lower back is reduced. Of course, I still have to try and limit the amount of time I sit for, but at least this will make it better for my back when I am sat down.

How I get on with the new seating position remains to be seen. Shall we take bets on how many times I fall off?

Well, it should arrive next week so I'll let you know how I get on with it.

Do you have one? If so, let me know how you get on with it. The one I've opted for swivells and is on casters so I still have the flexibility of movement of my traditional chair - just without the pain in the rear (I hope).

I can relate to what you are saying because I spend to much time in a chair. I went to www.thebowentechnique.com but all I could find were places in the UK. Do you know if anyone offers this in the USA? I also went to your website and signed up for your newsletter. I look forward to reading more about your new chair.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for commenting on my post. To find someone in the USA try http://bowendirectory.com/ It really is a great therapy. I will admit to being a slight sceptic when I first tried it but was blown away with the results. I began with a series of 4 treatments and now I'm down to 1 a year.

The chair should arrive in a day or so - it will be interesting to see how I get on with it

Best wishes.

Sally

Thank you for sharing this valuable information, Sally.
I find that my arthritis is really effected by long periods of sitting at the computer. Exercise helps, but it interrupts the flow of getting things done.
Looking forward to you future intel on the kneeling chair.
Best wishes.

That's great - you may find it tales a couple of days before you start to feel any benefit. Make sure you drink plenty of water. I thought I had after my first treatment but obviously not because I felt as though I'd been hit by a bus the next day.

BTW - my kneeling chair as arrived. After working out how on earth to put the thing together (why are the instructions with these things so bad?), it's now in use so I'll let you know how I get on with it.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I had 3 Bowen's treatments and I'm pain free.

Thank you Sally for writing this Intel
