The Truth About META Descriptions
By Sally Ormond of Briar Copywriting
If you follow my intel you'll know that I am on an SEO mission. The SEO industry is one that has been shrouded in mystery. Companies that deal with it will have you believe it is a complex being that should not be touched unless you have achieved a Black Belt in this mystical art. Phooey is what I say to that! SEO basically comes down to a well designed and easily navigable website, great SEO copywriting and a lot of backlinks. Not so mysterious now, is it. But the terminology can still be confusing. You have to get to grips with keywords, META tags, Page titles and hyperlinks. But again, these can all be easily explained. In this particular Intel I'm going to look at the META Description - which isn't anywhere near as scary as it sounds. When you type in a word or phrase in Google's search box, a list of results will appear. Under each of the website names is a short paragraph describing what the website is all about. That is your META Description. Unlike the other features of SEO I mentioned earlier, your META description won't affect your rankings. It is there for your readers not the search engine spiders. So why is it so important? Well, if you don't have one in your website coding Google will simply reach into your site and grab some text and use that. But the problem is, you don't know and have no control over what text Google will use. Therefore what appears under your website name may not be relevant. By writing a clear, compelling and eye-catching META Description which includes your keywords, you are sending a clear signal to your reader what your website is all about. So rather than boosting your rankings, a well written description will boost the number of click throughs you receive when you appear in the search results. So the moral is, when you are indulging in a little search engine optimisation always have your reader in the forefront of your mind. If you focus on the needs of the search engine spiders you will end up with a site that potentially ranks well, but won't convert your visitors into customers. Focus on your reader - think about what they want and how you can provide it for them. Get that information in your META Description and you will have far more chance of getting people to your website. If you need a good SEO copywriter or just need some advice on basic SEO, get in touch - that's what I'm here for.

Good information. It's critical to have a good description of each page, otherwise even if someone does find it when doing a search, they are unlikely to visit.
Thank you for demystefying this for me...fitting image (spider ) - I like that !
