The Shocking Truth About Web Companies

This intel was prompted by a conversation I had with a friend a few days ago. Let me tell you a story... My friend already has a website through which she publicises her pottery party business. Recently, she decided to set up another venture. This involves selling personalised plates for weddings, christenings etc. To make it work she needs an ecommerce website. She was just about ready to sign on the dotted line with a local web design agency when she attended a course run by Business Link. It was all about online marketing. Right at the end of the course the tutor began talking about the importance of title tags and how they are the single most important aspect of on screen SEO. This got her thinking. After referring back to her quote, there was no mention of title tags. She then took a look at the agency's portfolio which prompted a call to me. Together we had a look at the sites and none of them had correct title tags (or URLs but that's a different matter altogether). After asking my opinion, I confirmed what she'd been told on the course and suggested she went back to the agency. Sadly they were less than helpful and even told her that title tags really weren't that important. Their response was that the clients who commissioned the websites we'd looked at, hadn't been bothered about title tags. But that prompts the question were they not bothered, or did they not know to ask about them? Certainly, had my friend not attended the Business Link course she would have been non the wiser. As a result she is now looking at a couple of other designers I put her on to who do understand ecommerce and SEO. When looking for a web designer it is important to find one who understands great design and SEO. The title tag is the first thing Google reads when crawling your website. If it doesn't contain your keywords Google won't know what your site is about. You only have 70 characters to play with so using the right words is very important. The optimum arrangement would be: Primary keyword | Secondary keyword | Business name Or Business name | Primary Keyword | Secondary keyword A website is a big investment. If you are looking to enter the world of online marketing it is vital it is set up correctly to maximise your chances of being found. Granted, title tags aren't the be all and end all when it comes to SEO. You will also need great SEO copy, well researched keywords and a strategy to build links to your site. But without correct title tags the rest of the elements won't work. So the moral of this intel is do your research first and make sure you ask the right questions.
