Smurf Land

Hobbies change throughout our lives, but as a child my favourite hobby was to collect stuff. During our childhoods we often lurch from one collection to another. I collected all sorts - Matchbox cars, stamps, soft toys... But probably my favourite collection, and one that still sits in my loft, was those cute little blue people that were all the rage in the 80s. Yes, I'm talking about smurfs. Every week my pocket money would go on another little person. I would get my parents to drive miles round different petrol stations to find the figure I wanted. But I didn't stop there. I collected the houses and scenery too so by the time I was finished I had an entire Smurf nation in my bedroom. With the recent advent of the Smurf cartoon my boys wanted to see my collection. So they reappeared from the loft and we spent hours creating a Smurf village complete with Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Handyman Smurf and all the other 130+ figures I had collected over the years. Looking at it today I cringe at how much money I spent on those little lumps of plastic. Which is why today, when my boys want to spend all their birthday money on Warhammer I have to stop myself from saying "No! That's a complete waste of money" and remember what it meant to me to collect something. |
