Making The Most of Testimonials

By Sally Ormond of Briar Copywriting

If you're in marketing, you'll already know how powerful testimonials can be.

To a potential customer, the sheer fact that someone has been suitably impressed by your service to provide you with a written statement to that effect, shows you're a company that's trustworthy and good.

So it's really important that you ask for testimonials from your customers.

Mind you, having said that, I'm sure we've all been in the position that what comes through is something along the lines of "thank you, we were happy with the service you gave".

But that doesn't really tell anyone anything.

How to get powerful testimonials

If you want great testimonials, you have to ask the right questions.

Tell your customer that their feedback is important because it helps your company improve its service. Then ask them to answer a few questions, making it clear that you may use their responses as a testimonial.

You could ask:

- Why they chose you - what made you stand out over your
competitors?
- What did they need from you?
- How did you help overcome their problem?
- Where there any specific aspects of the service that were
useful?
- Would they recommend you and why?
- Do they want to add anything else?

Only by asking specific questions will you get the type of material you need.

When do you ask?

A lot of people feel awkward about asking for testimonials. Don't be - if they've received good service, they'll be more than happy to provide you with one. Plus, asking every customer is rather time consuming and simply not practical.

Try and ask as many as you can. Plus, if you offer a variety of products/services, try and get feedback for every aspect of your business to give a rounder picture.

If you add your testimonials to your website regularly, not only are you showing your trustworthiness and credentials, you are also providing fresh content, which is great for SEO purposes.

A good testimonial is worth its weight in gold. Potential customers want to learn about your company through the experience of other people. So the more you have the better.

Just make sure they are all genuine and their source is shown. A list of random quotes without named contributors is useless.

Make sure you add your testimonials to your website, brochures, email marketing, even your newsletters. Place them everywhere where potential new customers will see them.

People really do buy from people and a testimonial is the next best thing to a personal recommendation.

Just remember to be genuine, be up front and be truthful.

Thank you for sharing this valuable information, Sally. We have a number of testimonials on our website, but need to follow your advise and ask for more. Adding them to our newsletter is one thing we never thought of.
