Link it Baby
By Sally Ormond of Briar Copywriting
Forget about the age of aquarius - this is the age of the internet. Take a look at your own habits - where do you look these days for a local service provider or a specific product? I bet most of you turn to Google or another of the search engines. Today's businesses are beginning to cotton on to the fact that online is where they need to be. They don't necessarily have to sell on line, just being their and being seen as a service provider is enough to boost sales. But getting noticed amongst the many thousands of websites out there can be a problem. As a freelance copywriter I am being asked more and more for search engine optimised website copywriting. Finally companies are appreciating that websites are there for a reason - and that is to sell. Previously they were happy with paying a small fortune for something that was no more than a pretty online brochure. Now they want a return on that investment and that means SEO. Keyword research, keyword positioning and well written relevant copy is vital. But that will only get you so far. If you want to compete with the thousands of other websites out there you also need to get links. Back links are a vital part of your SEO. But we're not just talking about any old links here. Dashing out and buying hundreds of links just won't cut it. If you want Google to love you, you need lots of relevant links from authority sites. So how do you go about that? Well blogging is a great way to do this. I run a blog which featured in a lot of top freelance blog lists in 2009 and 2010. This gave me authority and hence the links from my blog to my website carried a lot of weight in the eyes of Google. Using Web 2 properties such as Squidoo and Hubpages will also help. Posting your profile on networking and social media sites will give you a boost as well. Basically if you are serious about SEO you also have to be serious about link building. The two go hand in hand - they are the Scooby and Srappy Doo of the internet world.

Thank you for this internet layman's advise, Sally. Building a website is only a small part of the internet process. Then the work really begins. Thank for sharing. Best to you, Frederick
Great advice Sally. I also use Squidoo, Tagfoot, Stumbleupon, Digg etc, plus am trying to make my own blogs more popular. Wishing you success in this new millenium. Tony
You are right on, these tools feed quality targeted traffic...
Businesses are starting to realize that "If you build it they will come" doesn't apply to websites. SEO and linking building are also necessary. Good Intel.
