Language Limits

We are all learn to speak our native language as we grow up. At school we are taught one or two new languages and encouraged to become bi-lingual. So why are there so many people only able to speak their own native tongue? Despite spending 7 years at school learning French and a year attempting German, I am still today only fluent in English. Admittedly I can ask for the basics in French but my ability to speak the language never developed beyond school basics. Why? Because I don't need to speak it. The international language of business is English; go to most countries and you'll find people able to speak English. Yes, we Brits are rather lazy when it comes to learning another language because everyone else in the world is so good at learning English! I would love to be able to speak several languages like Spanish, French, Italian and German, but unless I am in a position where I HAVE to learn them and will speak them regularly, I doubt very much it will happen. I greatly admire anyone who is fluent in more than one language. |
