English Literature Enlightened

It was when I reached the grand old age of 30 that I decided I needed to do something with my life. By this time I was a mum to two small children who constantly felt that there had to be more to life than changing nappies. At this point in my life I had rediscovered the joys of reading. I'd left school after A'Levels as I never believed I was capable of doing a degree. But, what kind of example was that to set my kids? So, at the age of 31 I embarked on a BA(Hons) degree course with the Open University studying English Language and English Literature. Year 4 was the turning point for me. Up to then, I was an OK student who dreamt of a first (albeit an unlikely achievement). But then I went away for a revision week for my first year of English Literature. Before that time I was admittedly stuggling to retain all the information required to pass an exam. The most daunting aspect for me was the poetry - it was something that I'd never managed to get to grips with even at school. But then I met Hamish, our tutor for the revision week. He was so inspiring everything suddenly became clear. His advice for exam revision strategies saw my grades leap up to a distinction. It was incredible and for the first time I truly believed that a first class honours degree was possible. Two years later that dream came true and I graduated with a First Class BA(Hons) in English Language and English Literature. Thank you Hamish for your help, advice, understanding and encouragement. |
